Three reasons emerging above-the-line creatives should develop their below-the-line skills and relationships.

It’s only a week until the second edition of CrewHQ‘s conference CrewCon. CrewCon fills a unique place in the Australian screen professional development space, providing a unique opportunity for emerging and experienced crew to connect and learn.

But, if you’re an emerging writer, director, or producer, it’s also an essential opportunity. For writers especially – getting out from behind the screen and learning about other parts of the business provides invaluable insights into story craft, constraints, decision-making, collaboration and process.

Three reasons why crew events aren’t just for crew:

1. Screen and creative careers have very permeable boundaries, and versatility is an essential part of being able to thrive. The more industry knowledge you have, the more it can help your craft or your business.
2. You never know where a connection or a new friendship in the industry will take you. Find your tribe.
3. A no-zero effort day approach to prioritising your development will always pay dividends. If you are an emerging creative – you are pointing yourself in the right direction each time you choose to invest in your own progress.

I’m not affiliated with CrewCon but did help Mercury CX deliver Australia’s first online screen conferences – National Screenmakers Conferences in 2020 and 2021 – which covered Writers, Producers and Directors.

CrewCon fills a gap and creates a bridge between states, agencies, universities and schools. Below the Line development is going to thrive with greater connection.

This hybrid in-person event + online is going to be a cracker – Kirsty Stark doesn’t do anything that’s not excellent.

Looking forward to what will be an inspiring and helpful session. See you at the Melbourne live kick-off and online.
